Major Award-Winning Actress at the Assembly Caroline O'Connor has won Australia's Helpmann Theatre award for best female actor for her role in End of the Rainbow. The show, which is set to headline at the Assembly Hall during this eyar's Edinburgh Fringe which opens officially on Saturday, charts the tumultuous final months of Judy Garland's life. O'Connor's performance has brought her critical acclaim, opening to a standing ovation. The show has broken all box office records at the Sydney Opera House and has travelled across Australia playing to packed out venues. Set against the backdrop of 1968 London, the musical takes the audience through the final months of Garland's life. The complex relationship with her fiancé Mickey Deans, the unending loyalty of her devoted accompanist Anthony Chapman, and the adoration of her fans are all explored and portrayed by O'Connor. All of this is woven together by some of the most moving and inspiring music ever written. The Helpmann Awards annually recognise distinguished artistic achievement and excellence in the many disciplines of Australia's live performance sectors. Named in honour of Robert Helpmann to commemorate his achievements, they were established in 2001 and are the Australian equivalent of the Tony Awards on Broadway and the Olivier Awards in London.
