Performers Demand 44% Rise

Equity is to ask for a 44% increase in the minimum wage for performers in the West End when it begins negotiations with the Society of London Theatre next month. It wants the present minimum of £381 a week to be increased to £550 with a new rate of £650 for those who are required to work on Sundays. Currently, because there is no agreement on Sunday working, rates are negotiated on an individual basis. The new rates will include stage managers who work under Equity contracts.

General secretary Christine Payne told The Stage that the claim is serious: "We think this is achievable. Equity has never been a union to put in claims just for the sake of it, and we don’t want to give our members false hope."

The claim comes as SOLT has announced another record year for West End theatre.

She has written to member asking for their support and warning that they may have to make "hard choices". SOLT chief executive Richard Pulford would not comment.
