"Pay NMW or Be Considered Amateur" - Equity Proposal Equity councillor Clive Hurst has put forward two motions for the union's Council to discuss next week, which would force fringe companies to pay the National Minimum Wage or be considered amateur. He told The Stage that he wants the minimum wage unit of the Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform to define what an amateur performance is, thus clarifying how profit share and low-paying shows fit into NMW guidelines, and for the government to make it illegal for services such as the online Casting Call Pro to advertise any jobs which do not pay at least the minimum wage. He told the paper that the fringe should be required to pay the NMW like other employers and that it could redfine itself as amateur to "get round" the regulation. He also suggested that public subsidy should be given to enable companies to meet the NMW requirements. In response Neil McPherson, artistic director of the Finborough, said, "If Equity put their time behind getting more funding for fringe, so we could pay the actors, that would be far more useful."
