Equity in Conference

At Equity's Annual Representative Conference, held last week, general secretary Christine Payne warned of the dangers facing members in the current climate, especially the anticipated decline in theatre funding.

"We continue to have concerns on the level of public investment in theatre and in turn the future work opportunities and jobs for our members," she said, and went on to warn that the next Comprehensive Spending Review will almost certainly lead to "real cuts".

She also expressed concerns about the future of public service broadcasting, the reduction in the amount of drama produced by ITV, the impact of YouTube and internet piracy.

The conference called for Ofcom to change its regulations so that BBC productions which are described as "regional" must have a percentage of those on-screen being from outside of London, not merely employing non-London crew.

The union also reinforced the call in the McMaster Report for at least two practitioners be on the board of every publicly funded arts organisation. The conference motion called upon the union to campaign to persuade Arts Council England that actors should be represented on all boards of theatres and theatre companies which receive public funding.
