David Essex

Essex to Star in Footloose

David Essex is to play Rev Shaw Moore in the West End production of the musical Footloose at the Novello Theatre for three months only from 5th June. He joins Cheryl Baker who plays his wife Vi, Amy Pemberton (his daughter Ariel) and Derek Hough (Ren McCormack).

David Essex first achieved national fame as Jesus in Godspell in 1971 and he went on to make numerous films, including That'll Be the Day (1973) and Stardust (1974). During the seventies a number of his singles reached the top ten and two, Gonna Make You a Star and Hold Me Close reached number one. In 1978 he appeared in Jeff Wayne's concept album The War of the Worlds and also play Che in Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice's Evita.

In 1985, he wrote and starred as Fletcher Christian in the West End musical Mutiny! and four years later appeared in a TV sitcom, The River. He was awarded the OBE in 1999.
