East to Edinburgh

Following the success of East to Edinburgh in 2003 which saw Arts Council England, East support six companies and an Artist In Residence from the East of England at the Edinburgh Festival, the search is now on for next year's participants.

The East to Edinburgh initiative is run by Junction CDC in Cambridge and Colchester Arts Centre, with press and marketing support from Norwich’s SFP Communications, and is funded by ACE East. At the 2003 Fringe East to Edinburgh supported the companies financially, provided them with a freelance press agent, organised print distribution, proactively encouraged venue managers and promoters from all over the world to see the work and organised regular get-togethers at which all participants could share their experiences and advice.

This was the very first time that one of the Arts Council’s regional offices has supported performers from their region in this way and it proved uniquely successful. Amongst many triumphs, the collaboration between Tiebreak and Hoipolloi theatre companies produced the 5 star My Uncle Arly, chosen as Pick of the Fringe and invited perform at the Festival of Firsts at The Royal Opera House. It is about to transfer to The Lyric Theatre Hammersmith.

David Farmer of Norwich’s Tiebreak Theatre Company said, "This was our first visit to the Fringe and we had a lot to learn very quickly in a busy and pressured environment. East to Edinburgh gave us a great deal of moral support, as well as more tangible help such as press support, marketing advice and leaflet distribution. There was a great feeling of camaraderie amongst all the groups and organisers. We were kept in daily contact with one another and were able to share our experiences and problems. It was a great way to dip our toes in the water!"

Andrea Stark, Executive Director of Arts Council England, East said, "The success of East to Edinburgh goes to show the depth and breadth of talent we have in our region – it’s been a fantastic experience for everyone involved and a real opportunity to demonstrate what the East has to offer on a worldwide stage. Arts Council England, East has been delighted to have played its part – and along with artists, arts organisations, promoters and schedulers, we’ll be looking to build on this success to further develop our regional reputation at the 2004 Fringe."

Paul Gudgin, Director of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, said, "I am thrilled that Arts Council England, East took the initiative to support its home-grown talent at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. The Fringe applauds and supports this creative approach, and wish both Arts Council England and their performers all the very best for next year's Festival."

East to Edinburgh is open to professional artists intending or considering performing at the Edinburgh Festival in 2004 who live or work in Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Essex, Hertfordshire, Norfolk or Suffolk.
