Do You Love Eurovision?

In 2003 songwriter and British passport holder Craig Christie was denied the chance to write an entry for the Eurovision Song Contest because he lives in Australia. Hurt to the core, he was inspired to go one better and write a whole musical on the subject. And so, Eurobeat was born.

One of the hits of the 2007 Edinburgh Fringe, Eurobeat: almost Eurovision (Sarajevo), which Christie co-wrote with Andrew Patterson, is to tour nationally from 15th April.

Described as "the world's first interactive musical", its audience members are each allocated to one of the ten competing countries as they enter the theatre and, as with Eurovision, the audience votes for their favourite contestants via text message.

The "programme" is hosted by Former Olympic pole-vaulting champion, lifestyle program hostess and cabaret performer Boyka (played, depending on venue, by Mel Giedroyc or Sally Lindsay) and children's TV presenter Sergei (played, depending on venue, by Les Dennis, Gareth Hale, Craig Hill or Billy Pearce) and the "face of Eurovision", Terry Wogan, makes an appearance, alebit on the screen and not in the flesh.
