Daniel Evans

Evans to Take Over at Sheffield

Sheffield Theatres (the Crucible and the Lyceum) has appointed Daniel Evans, Olivier winner (Best Actor in a Musical for Merrily We Roll Along in 2001 and for Sunday in the Park with George in 2007) and Tony nominee (Best Actor in a Musical for Sunday in the Park with George), as the new artistic director.

He will take up the post on a part-time basis from 20th April, going full-time on 1st June. As the Crucible is currently undergoing a major refurbishment which is due to be finished in November, his first season will begin in February 2010.

"I am thrilled to be joining Sheffield Theatres as Artistic Director," he said." Having had hugely fulfilling experiences myself at Sheffield I look forward to joining Donna Munday, the interim Chief Executive, and the excellent team currently in place, and contributing to the cultural life of the city."

He appeared as Ariel in the Crucible's production of The Tempest and in Caryl Churchill's Cloud Nine. His first Olivier came in a Donmar Warehouse production directed by the theatre's former artistic director Michael Grandage, who also directed the Sheffield Tempest.

He has worked as an actor with the RSC, National Theatre and Royal Court. He has directed a double bill of plays by Peter Gill, Lovely Evening and In the Blue, at the Young Vic, Gill's Certain Young Men for his drama school the Guildhall and Esther for Welsh National Theatre. He also directed a reading of Christopher Hampton's Total Eclipse as part of the Royal Court's fiftieth anniversary.

Sheffield Theatres has been without an artstic director since Sam West resigned in 2007, following the closure of the Crucible, because, as he told The Stage, "The job of artistic director becomes unviable when there’s no art to direct." (See our story of 21st January, 2007)
