The Evans Theatre in Wilmslow (Cheshire) may be be closed as part of a scheme to redevelop the aging leisure centre of which it is part. Under plans being considered by Macclesfield council, the theatre may be moved into a local high school. A report on leisure services commissioned by the council says that the councils best option would be to amalgamate the theatre with the school, particularly as the school is due to mount a bid for specialist arts status within the next three years. This," the report says, "provides an ideal opportunity for development of a new performance space to better meet the needs of both the school and the arts community in Wilmslow." The theatre was originally set up after a £125,000 legacy from arts patron Mabel Evans was handed over to Macclesfield council twenty years ago following local government reorganisation. Instead of providing a stand-alone theatre as was hoped, it was incorporated into the leisure centre which was under construction at the time. The theatre is mainly used by local amateur groups which have said they will oppose the move. Please note that all three Archive indices are very long and will therefore take some time to download.
