NE graduate dance company Fertile Ground will present a new fashion inspired work when it performs On the Darkened Wing at the Customs House in South Shields on 22nd March.

The piece is an "exploration of plumes and feathers in fashion and the sometimes deadly cost of our vanity" and was developed when the company's four dancers workedwith second year BA (Hons) Costume Interpretation & Design students from Cleveland College of Art and Design and course leader Jane Havakin (best known for her designs for Topshop, Harrods and John Lewis) to "explore the beauty and dark romance of feathers and plumes."

The dance and costumes inspired by the Birds of Paradise – Plumes and Feathers in Fashion exhibition at the Bowes Museum and Hannah Jackson, Assistant Curator, said, "Working with costume students and dance graduates is a really exciting partnership, which we hope to continue."

Recently the students have been involved in working on costumes for BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing, The Lion King musical and ITV’s Downton Abbey.

The Customs House performance also features NOW (choreographed by Dora Frankel), Shields of Bone (Eleesha Drennan), Land (Alys North) and A New Chimera (Tom Dale).
