The London Eye

An Eye on Theatre

The latest addition to the theatres in the area around the South Bank of the Thames - which include the National Theatre, the Globe, the Old Vic, the Young Vic, the Southwark Playhouse, the Union Theatre and the Menier Chocolate Factory - is the London Eye. Or it will be on 21st June when, for certain evening flights (a complete rotation of the wheel is a flight), each of the 32 capsules will be taken over by performers.

There will be singers, comedians and theatre companies, including the National Theatre and the Royal Court, Shunt and Recorded Delivery. The Royal Court capsule will feature one minute plays from, among others, Roy Williams, Joe Penhall, Simon Stephens, Anthony Neilson and Tanika Gupta.

Flights are at 7.30pm, 8.15pm and 9.00pm and tickets are £21. The event is in aid of CAFE Direct, the fair trade organisation.

Flight 5065, as the event is called, brings people together to play a part in the transformation of cultural attitudes toward Africa in 2005. This extraordinary showcase of both up-and-coming and established talent aims to excite and enlighten, bust stereotypes and raise consciousness on a personal level. Once embarked, you'll find yourself on a journey fuelled by satire or song, truth or fantasy, politics or personality - a trip that could take you anywhere from Congo to Clapham. The aim, says the organisation, is "to promote Cafedirect's Gold Standard Fairtrade model and celebrate Africa before the G8 summit."

Each capsule holds twenty people.

Tickets are available online from Ticketweb, or phone 08700 600 100. Latecomers, under 18s and anyone under the influence of alcohol will not be permitted to board Flight 5065. Tickets are non-refundable.
