Festivals Sex Trafficking Play London Preview Fair Trade, a play about sex trafficking in Britain, which is to play in the Theatre Arena at the Latitude Festival at the Pleasance Dome during the Edinburgh Fringe, will preview at Rich Mix in Bethnal Green Road from 22nd to 25th July. Written by Anna Holbek and Shelley Davenport with Kate Ferguson and directed by Lotte Wakeham, this Shatterbox Theatre Company production is produced by Oscar-winning actress Emma Thompson who said, "I'm extremely proud to be involved in this production; it's one of the best scripts I've seen in years. Sex trafficking is a hugely important subject, and I believe we need as much art as we can get to help people understand what's going on out there." The play was developed over an eight-month process of workshops, interviews and research. Shelley and Anna were introduced to Elena and Samai, whose real-life accounts form the basis of Fair Trade, through the Helen Bamber Foundation. It debuted at The Pleasance Theatre in 2009 in association with the Foundation and in 2010 the company were invited to perform at Latitude Festival. Fair Trade demonstrates the threat that human trafficking poses, particularly in the lead up to the 2012 Olympics, but employs humour, music and choreography to do so. While showing the harsh reality of the women's experiences, the play is careful to avoid sentimentality.
