Fast Forward to Trafalgar Square Get down to Trafalgar Square on Sunday 22nd August and fast forward to a future London. Prepare to enter into a space where artists and performers take an imaginative leap into London's creative future.
Fast Forward anticipates the cultural landscape of London in the future with its multiplicity of ethnicities, languages, sights, sounds and technology. Part of the Mayor's Trafalgar Square Summer 2004 programme, the event brings together a mixed line up. Over the four hours, the audience will experience everything from rising UK hip hop star Estelle (whose song 1980 is currently at no.14) to acclaimed contemporary dancer Sheron Wray, to a spectacular aerial performance created by Vicki Amedume. BBC London is hosting the event through the Roots and decibel initiatives, projects aimed at increasing the profile of diverse arts and cultures. Shehani Fernando, Roots coordinator for London, and the event programmer, said, "Many of the featured artists have been commissioned to create site specific new work that responds to the theme, such as the collaboration between choreographer Vena Ramphal and Nasha Records producer Ges-e. The event will give them a high profile platform and hopefully encourage Londoners to see more of this work." London 2012 are also commissioning work which relates to London's potential as a host city for the Olympics. "London is acknowledged as the cultural capital of the world and young artists are at the centre of London's creativity," said Jude Kelly, Chair of Arts, Culture and Education at London 2012. "The bid to bring the Olympics to London celebrates London life and culture, and invites the world to share in that celebration. Fast Forward makes a leap for culture in 2012!" "We share the Mayor's vision for a London whose streets and public places buzz with arts and culture, and are delighted to support Fast Forward. as one of the range of events happening in Trafalgar Square this summer," Sarah Weir, Executive Director of Arts Council England, London, said. "Our Roots partnership with the BBC is about celebrating the range of artistic talent from different cultures that flourishes here. decibel - our initiative to raise the profile of culturally diverse arts - has born fabulous fruit, as witnessed by the great selection of artists performing at Fast Forward. It should be a great show and, of course, it's free!' Mayor Ken Livingstone said, 'The Trafalgar Square Summer programme showcases London's creativity and diversity - both key to its success as a great world city - and Fast Forward is no exception. What makes this event particularly exciting is how it underpins the role that cultural activity will play in the capital's bid to host the 2012 Games.'
