Fela! Legal Challenge

The producers of the musical Fela!, which opens at the National Theatre on 16th November, are facing a New York lawsuit by Carlos Moore, an author who claims they used his biography Fela Fela: Cette Putain de Vie as a source for the show without negotiating a proper payment. He says he was offered $4,000 in 2007 which he refused, demanding instead "an advance and participation in the royalty pool".

No further offer was made. Writer Jim Lewis and director Bill T Jones, he claims, continued to use his biography without his consent. The show went on to be a big success on Broadway and he is now seeking $5m and to block the Broadway and London productions as well as any future productions.

An NT spokesman says that "the originating producers of Fela! have told us they have all the rights necessary for the show" so it will go ahead as planned.

The production is currently previewing in the Olivier Theatre.
