Festival Highlights Returns to Edinburgh
Producer James Seabright returns to the festival following the Fringe
First winning success of his collaboration with Martin Sutherland last
year. His line-up of twelve theatre, comedy and music shows from around
the world are summarised below, with full releases to follow. Together
with four shows from producer Louise Chantal, which will be announced
separately, these shows will be promoted under the Festival Highlights
banner, which was a big hit with festival audiences in 2003.
David Benson's Haunted Stage
At Assembly Drawing Room (Venue 3) 6-30 August (except Tuesday 17) at
12.45pm (1h10m)
Ever seen a ghost? For his fifth solo show premiered at the Edinburgh
Fringe, David Benson moves from dead camp comics to dead scary ghost
stories, hearing of true encounters and bringing classic tales to spine-chilling
life.
The Elephant Woman by Population: 3
At Pleasance Two (Courtyard Venue 33) 4-30 August (except Tuesdays 10
& 17) at 7.00pm (1h)
Loosely based on cult film The Elephant Man. But with a woman. The brilliantly
funny creators of the sell-out hit The Wicker Woman are back
with another utterly irreverent cult film spoof. (The Wicker Woman
also returns for ten days: At Pleasance Cavern (Courtyard Venue 33)
20-29 August 2004 at 12.20pm (1h))
Paul Foot - Simple Pleasures
At Pleasance Hut (Courtyard Venue 33) 4 - 30 August 2004 (except Tuesdays
10, 17) at 7.40pm (1h)
Following the sell-out success of his first full-length Edinburgh solo
show in 2003, Paul Foot returns with an hour of surreal, shambolic and
ultimately rather silly stand-up comedy to enthral, infuriate and entertain
in equal measure.
Julian Fox - New Spaces For Role Models
At Pleasance Above (Courtyard Venue 33) 5-30 August (except Tuesdays
10 & 17) at 5.30pm (50mins)
'My favourite is probably the North terminal. It feels a bit classier.'
A confessional comedy about Gatwick airport, with songs. Julian Fox
returns following the success of Rebranding Mr God and Goodbye
Seattle Coffee Company.
Gone by Glyn Cannon
At Pleasance Cavern (Courtyard Venue 33) 5-30 August (except Tuesdays
10 & 17) at 3.00pm (1h)
The Antigone story enters the age of spin, shock and awe. Following
hot on the heels of his London debut with On Blindness at Soho
Theatre, Glyn Cannon's radical reworking of Sophocles is directed by
Hannah Eidinow.
Graffiti Classics
At Pleasance AceDome (Venue 23) 15-18 August 2004 at 3.00pm (1h)
Sixteen strings, eight dancing feet, four voices: not gypsy, not jazz-
not folk, not classical, but an eclectic range of music and slapstick
from this international string quartet, who come to Edinburgh fresh
from a QE2 residency.
Carl-Einar Häckner - Heart
At Pleasance Above (Courtyard Venue 33) 5-30 August (except Tuesdays
10 & 17) at 6.40pm (1h)
Magical, musical comedy from the man voted Sweden's funniest entertainer
(and sexiest man). By turns hilarious and breathtaking: Tommy Cooper
meets Alice Cooper. The UK debut of a uniquely brilliant performer.
Natalie Haynes - Still Not Sorry
At Assembly Drawing Room (Venue 3) 6-30 August (except Tuesday 17) at
7.45pm (1h)
For her third full-length fringe show, the Perrier Best Newcomer nominee
2002 returns to Edinburgh with her perennial fixation on death and fondness
for maths. Natalie will also explain why she continues to ignore her
critics.
Loaded by Scott Capurro
At Pleasance Cavern (Courtyard Venue 33) 4-30 August (except Tuesdays
10 & 17) at 4.30pm (1h10m)
Why do we fall for the wrong people? A good question to ask when you're
the love-struck penpal of parent murderer Eric Menendez. This new play
stars its Perrier-winning author and James Holmes (Anorak of Fire).
Directed by Owen Lewis.
Chris Neill - The BBC, Andrew Gilligan, And Me
At Pleasance Beside (Courtyard Venue 33) 5-30 August (except Tuesdays
10 & 17) at 5.45pm (1h)
From Teddington to Broadcasting House: the everyday story of a showbiz
ingénu, his childhood chum and Auntie.
Nine Days Crazy by Chris Goode
At Pleasance Queen Dome (Venue 23) 4 - 29 August 2004 (except Tuesdays
10, 17) at 7pm (1h30m)
Double Fringe First winner Chris Goode returns with a new solo show
inspired by Will Kemp's Nine Daies Wonder. Can a morris dancing
escapade restore Chris's faith in humanity? Directed by Liam Jarvis
& Ria Parry.
