British baritone Sir Thomas Allen's production of Mozart's The Marriage of Figaro, a revival of the company's 2010 production, will open Scottish Opera's 2016-7 season in October at Theatre Royal Glasgow.

The production will travel to Aberdeen, Inverness and Edinburgh before the company pays its first visit to the Empire Theatre in Liverpool in January 2017.

Figaro will be performed by Ben McAteer, with Samuel Dale Johnson as Count Almaviva, Anne Devin as Susanna, Donald Maxwell as Antonio, Eleanor Dennis as Countess Almaviva and Marie McLaughlin as Marcellina. Tobias Ringborg and Timothy Burke will share conducting duties.

McAteer said, "I'm thrilled to be returning to Scottish Opera this season and to be taking on the role of Figaro. He's cheeky, irreverent and gets most of the good tunes!

"Most exciting for me is the chance to work closely with Sir Thomas Allen. I've been a huge fan of his since I started listening to opera as a teenager, and his insight and experience is something I'm looking forward to learning from."

Allen added, "the greatest works of art stand examination again and again. There’s always something new to find in layer after layer; a road that will take you to new aspects of the story."
