Fighting in the North East

The Actors Centre North East is now offering training for the British Academy of Dramatic Combat Level 1 Certificate.

Whether it is Shakespeare, Vanbrugh or Churchill, the demands of the scene often call for characters to engage in violent dramatic action. Only with appropriate training can these scenes be executed both safely and effectively. However, some actors have not undergone formal training or did not receive stage combat training in their course and therefore have not had the chance to gain the required skills. Others may have had some training but feel their skills are out of date or 'rusty'.

The Actor's Centre North East is now offering the opportunity to gain a recognized qualification in stage combat awarded by the British Academy of Dramatic Combat (BADC) which is the oldest established, largest and most internationally respected stage combat teaching organization in the UK. As the industry lead body for stage combat training in professional theatre, television and film, the BADC has a special relationship with Equity which regards stage combat as an essential aspect of every actor's training. The BADC Basic Proficiency Certificate (Level 1) is the principle qualification recognized by the industry as a benchmark of competence in stage combat.

The course is taught by Kevin Rowntree who is a BADC Instructor with over fifteen years of professional experience as an actor, director and teacher. Kevin has provided stage combat training to professional actors and drama schools in the UK and overseas including Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts, University of Leeds, University of Hull, the International School of Florence and the Hong Kong Academy of Performing Arts.

This course is an intensive 8 day programme over 4 weekends leading to the examination for the BADC Level 1 Certificate. The course covers all the techniques of the three major weapon systems most commonly used in the British Theatre. Participants will study the methods and practice of Renaissance rapier and dagger, Restoration swordplay and contemporary unarmed combat techniques.

The course has a strong performance base and participants will ultimately present the fight routines they learn in the context of a dramatic scene for the examination which will take place on the final day of the programme. The demands of the course are extremely high, particularly physically, and should only be attempted by individuals who are reasonably fit and healthy.
