The Last Nine
The Global Search for New Musicals Announces the Shows to be Performed
in Cardiff
The International Festival in Cardiff has announced the final nine
musicals selected by a panel of eighty professional theatre practitioners
from nearly 200 submissions. The following nine musicals have been chosen
for the inaugural Global Search for New Musicals Sony Showcases to be
held in Cardiff at the Sherman Theatre from the 1st - 3rd November 2002.
BILL ONE: (Friday 1st November at 2.30pm and Sunday 3rd November at
10.30pm)
SUMMER (USA)
Book and Lyrics by Erik Haagensen Music by Paul Schwartz
Based on the novel by Edith Wharton
In 1910 Massachusetts, a young mountain girl, who has been adopted into
a small town, falls in love and shows that she has never lost her free
spirit.
CHILDREN OF THE NIGHT (USA)
Book, Music and Lyrics by Scott Martin
The true story of Bram Stoker's passionate devotion to Henry Irving,
and his quest to persuade the great actor to star in the first theatrical
version of "Dracula."
ME AND AL (USA)
Lyrics by Donald Abramson Book by Judy Freed Music by Leo Schwartz
The (trueish) story of Dr Schwimmer, the optometrist who was killed
in the St Valentine's Day Massacre. A hilarious account of a little
man who wants more than a dull life and bumbles into a historical event.

2.30pm)
CITY OF DREAMS (USA)
Book and Lyrics by David Zellnik Music by Joseph Zellnik
Vienna, 1889. A dashing, melancholic Prince, a 16 year-old social climber

JASON AND THE ARGONAUTS (England)
Book, Music and Lyrics by Peter Anthony and Denise Wright
The classic myth of Jason's quest to find the Golden Fleece is told
in a riot of song and dance!
THE AWAKENING (USA)

In New Orleans at the turn of century a young society wife rejects her
class, her husband and children to become an artist and free herself.

ORLANDUS (USA)
By Dean Strober. Original arrangements and compositions by the Golden
Gate Quartet.
The true story of Orlandus Wilson, the driving force behind the Golden
Gate Quartet and a unique style of jubilee spirituals that has transcended
race, religion and nationality.
DANCE OF THE DRAGON (Wales)
by Matthew Brind, Philip Michell and the Unknown Theatre Company
Five Welsh youngsters journey into the Land of Lost Souls to rescue
their friend Spike and to discover why the dragon has lost its fire.
GAY POETS IN MUD (England)
Book, Music and Lyrics by Richard Free and Peter Shrubshall
In this madcap story, Tommy Atkins dreams of becoming a panto star,
but joins up at the start of the First World War and causes mayhem across
the world!
The Global Search for New Musicals is a new initiative run by The International
Festival of Musical Theatre in Cardiff, and is designed to bring the
best new musicals from around the world to the attention of producers,
directors and the general public. The Global Search is the only worldwide
forum for new musicals, and the only initiative of its type in the UK.
Works submitted have come from all ages and nationalities, the youngest
entrant is just 14 years old and work was sent from as far field as
Australia, Bermuda, Finland and the Ukraine.
The International Festival of Musical Theatre in Cardiff celebrates
musical theatre both old and new, large and small, and includes anything
in which music contributes an integral part of the dramatic form. Giving
the Festival its true international flavour, this inaugural festival's
programmes works incorporates writers and performers from Africa, America,
Australia, The Czech Republic, England, France, Italy and Wales.
