New Leeds Arts Space The West Yorkshire Playhouse has opened First Floor, a new creative arts space in the centre of Leeds. It contains a performing arts studio, visual arts studio, Green Room, and a large reception and informal meeting area, with all areas fully accessible. It occupies the first floor of St Peters building which is adjacent to the Playhouse and was, until 2007, the home to thousands of the theatres props. Extensive building work was carried out in 2008 and included new floors, windows, plumbing, central heating and the installation of a new lift. Its aim is to engage and inspire vulnerable young people through creative arts including activities such as drama workshops, storytelling, street dance, action painting and environmental art alongside longer term projects such as a community radio station. The initial programme of activities up until Easter 2009 will comprise weekly Drop In workshops (where participants can try their hand at a variety of art forms), an Arts Foundation Course (open to those not attending regular education, training or employment), an Open Day (14th February) and a two day course during half term. The creative programme will develop further over the coming months to fully realise the scope and reach of First Floor and will see the facilities open daytime, evenings and weekends. Artistic Director and Joint Chief Executive of West Yorkshire Playhouse, Ian Brown, said, "First Floor is dedicated to the artistic growth of the next generation of theatre goers and makers. It has been designed to engage and support young peoples creative development through their participation in arts activities. We have created an environment where participants should not be afraid to try new things and express their ideas and where they will gain the confidence from their achievements to take them forward in life."
