"Flash Mob" Protest at ACE Cuts

Yesterday (Tuesday 15th January) at one o'clock over 200 young theatre-makers, led by directors from the Young Vic Genesis project, staged a silent, masked protest outside the Criterion Theatre in Piccadilly Circus for fifteen to draw attention to the way in which Arts Council England has gone about its planned cuts.

A statement from the group said "As a community of young theatre makers, we feel betrayed by Arts Council England's procedure in making this year's round of funding cuts. We are responding as a community.

"As a new generation of theatre makers, we want an Arts Council we can trust and with whom we can build a bright future for British theatre."

They carried placards with messages such as:

This protest is NOT a protest against Funding Cuts in general.
We are protesting specifically at Arts Council England's procedure.

We are protesting Arts Council England's failure to involve theatre-practitioners in its decision-making process.

We're not stars of the stage (yet)
We're not on your radar (yet)
We're not "excellent" (yet)
And we never will be...
unless Arts Council England works with the theatre community to imporve theprocess by which it makes its funding decisions.

We are protesting the unrealistic brevity of the appeal process to the affected organisations.
Five weeks over Christmas just isn't good enough.

We are protesting the lack of transparency in Arts Council England's funding cuts decision making
