Frank Middlemass and Josephine Tewson in The Importance of Being Earnest
Frank Middlemass with Josephine Tewson in The Importance of Being Earnest

Frank Middlemass (1919 - 2006)

Actor Frank Middlemass has died at the age of 87.

Born in Eaglescliffe (Stockton-on-Tees), he served in the army during World War II, was wounded at Dunkirk and rose to the rank of lieutenant colonel. In 1949 he joined a rep company in Penzance and played in weekly rep, clulminating, eventually, in seasons at both Old Vics, in Bristol and London. In 1984 he joined the RSC where he appeared in Romeo and Juliet, A Midsummer Night's Deam, Love's Labours Lost and as Polonius in Hamlet.

He made numerous appearance in the West End, frequently at the Theatre Royal Haymarket, and in other theatres throughout the country. During the 90s, when he was in his seventies, he continued to perform in the West End and on tour. In fact, he was still touring (as Canon Chasuble in The Importance of Being Earnest) in 2003 at the age of 84.

He is fondly remembered as the fourth and final Dan Archer in the long-running radio soap, and his television credits include As Time Goes By (1993-2005), with Judi Dench and Geoffrey Palmer, and the first series of Heartbeat (1992) in which he played Dr Alex Ferrenby.
