Edinburgh Musical Theatre Awards

Musical Theatre Matters (MTM:UK), the national network for producers and creatives working to nurture and develop new musical theatre in Britain, has developed new awards for musical theatre at the Edinburgh Fringe to celebrate the creativity of the Fringe and the potential of those creating and presenting work in Britain today.

"The future of musical theatre in Britain is not hidden on the CD shelves of the West End producers, nor currently playing on Broadway, nor sitting in catalogues of pop music publishers – the future is in the young writers, young directors, and emerging producers who take the risk by putting on new work, presenting it in a crazy theatre space, and exploring the voices of the future," said Chris Grady, Chair of MTM:UK. "MTM:UK is dedicated to uncovering that talent, and whilst we should also acclaim the major Fringe productions, I hope we have a diverse list of shows which include a couple of pieces you may not yet have spotted. Please go and see them all, and see whether you agree with our nominations."

"We've had much debate between us about the nature of the Best New Musical Award – We have used the Fringe First criteria to gather our long list of eligible works. We should celebrate what is Best on the Fringe. However in our hearts we are hoping to encourage new writers who may not have had the advantage of serious investment and production enhancement yet - as well as those who will make their way to the West End or Broadway very soon. I hope the nomination list illustrates this dichotomy and you will agree it includes a good spread."

The winner of the Dress Circle.com Award for Best New Musical will be offered a place in the Perfect Pitch showcase event, which features twelve new works which are ready for full production or development. Perfect Pitch runs 16th - 28th October at Upstairs at the Gatehouse and is produced by Andy Barnes in association with MTM:UK.

"Perfect Pitch was established to help the development of new musicals and to provide a platform for their writers and creators to present their work to a London based industry audience and the general public. I am delighted to offer the winner of the Dress Circle.com Award for Best New Musical the chance to present their work in at this year's event in October. Whilst many producers are able to visit the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, there are plenty who are not who will enjoy the chance to get a taste of what they've missed!" said Andy Barnes

In addition the Judges are considering Commendations to celebrate the work of the Creative team in the production, and the work of the cast/ensemble in bringing a particular piece to life. As well as those nominated above we are also considering the following works/companies

  • Blood from Stone – Through The Window Theatre
  • Confessions of Julian Po– The RSAMD Company
  • Force 9½ - Youth Music Theatre (YMT:UK)
  • Sweeney Todd – Fitz Company
  • Tony! The Blair Musical – White Rose Theatre Company from York

Over the next week the Judges will review each show and reach agreement by the time of the announcement as part of the Scotsman Fringe First Awards Ceremony on Friday 24th August at Assembly Hall.

"A number of musicals are only playing in Week 3. We will continue to review and assess these works and the Judges reserve the right to add them to the Nominations for final consideration …we keep searching," said Chris Grady.
