Forum Theatre - an Introduction

Sunday 18th & Sunday 25th January

Forum Theatre - an introduction with members of Théâtre de l'Opprimé (Paris)

1pm - 7pm | £8 | The Arches 253 Argyle St, Glasgow | box office: 0141 565 1023

"This is a process of thinking together" Augusto Boal

The Theatre of the Oppressed was established in the 1970s by Brazilian director and Working Party activist Augusto Boal, as a form of popular theatre for, by and of people engaged in the struggle for liberation. Bridging the gap between the "actor" and the "spectator", the Theatre of the Oppressed is practiced by "spect - actors" who have the opportunity to both act and observe and who engage in self empowering processes of dialogue that help foster critical thinking.

Open to professional artists, The Arches hosts a series of two workshops introducing the participants to the founding principles of the method. It will be led by Estelle Rosenfeld and Carlo Iacucci from the Théâtre de l'Opprimé (Theatre of the Oppressed) in Paris. It will consist of two practical working sessions with a group of about 15 participants on two consecutive Sundays. We will train with exercises and games from the method originated by Augusto Boal, introducing physical group exercises, improvisation, and forum theatre. The program will be the following.

On the first day we will practice with the categories of games and exercises of the Theatre of the Oppressed fostering different sorts of improvisation, and then introduce the work with the image theatre, which displays many of the founding principles of the practice.

On the second day we will develop the work with image theatre in more depth, and then practice on issues about the devising of forum theatre shows. We will work with forum theatre "models", and maybe also with personal stories.

Places on the workshop are limited and advance bookings recommended! Any reservations not paid in full 24 hours before workshop date will be released. Please book directly with The Arches box office 0141 565 1023.
