Stephen Gately

Gately Leaves Godspell Tour

It has been announced that Stephen Gately has left the production of Godspell which is currently touring for "contractual reasons".

A joint statment from the Producers of Godspell and Stephen Gately, quoted on his website, says, " Due to contractual reasons Stephen Gately has unfortunately had to withdraw from the cast of Godspell."

In the Forum section of the website, Gateley says, "I am sorry about the Godspell news and I know how disappointing this news has been to you and the inconvenience this had caused. I've just read the thread in the Godspell forum and I'm as upset as you all are as I did want to do the tour but unfortunately as the statement says due to contractual issues I had to withdraw. At this stage I'm hope you will understand I can't say anything more than that.

"Thank you all for your concern but I am well and I really do appreciate your continued support for everything I do and hope you will still come along to see me at anything I do in the future."

A public statment issued through his agent says, "I can confirm that I have had to leave the tour of Godspell due to contractual problems and would like to make it clear that I was not asked to leave nor was my employment terminated. Sadly, this situation has arisen even though I fulfilled all my contractual obligations. I am very disappointed as we gad a great show with a great cast, and I hate having to let so many people down who were coming to see the show."

According to a report in the Daily Mail, the parting of the ways came because of a clash with producer Paddy Wilson over poor ticket sales.

Understudy Tom Bradley has taken over the part of Jesus since Gately's last performance at Manchester's Palace Theatre on 29th September.

The production begins the third leg of its tour on Monday at Llandudno before going on to Darlington Civic Theatre, Sunderland Empire, Swansea Grand, Glasgow Theatre Royal and Birmingham Alexandra.
