The Gate Is 30 banner

Generation Gate

Generation Gate is the title of the April to July season at Notting Hill's Gate Theatre in its 30th anniversary year.

The Gate, under the artistic leadership of Natalie Abrahami and Carrie Cracknell, celebrates its 30th anniversary in 2009 with a season which includes the UK premiere of Spanish playwright Juan Mayorga’s Nocturnal; the second annual New Directions award and another exciting partnership with Sadler’s Wells with the transfer of the critically acclaimed dance piece Press, created and performed by Pierre Rigal.

21st April (previews from 16th) to 16th May
Nocturnal
By Juan Mayorga, in a new translation by David Johnston
Directed by Lyndsey Turner; designed by Hannah Clark with animation by Matthew Walker, sound by Christopher Shutt and lighting by Katharine Williams.
UK premiere of the play by one of Spain’s most celebrated writers, Juan Mayorga
Two men live in the same apartment block. One likes long walks, Greek myths and foreign languages. The other likes making lists, fixing bikes and blackmail. One day they bump into each other in a local. Only this is no coincidence; one of them has been planning this moment for a very, very, very long time.
Nocturnal explores the complex nature of friendship, stripping away to reveal the layers of polite behaviour to reveal the power struggles beneath human relationships.

28th to 30th May 2009 at Sadler’s Wells
The Gate at Sadler’s Wells
Press
Created and Performed by Pierre Rigal
Lighting and set design by Frédéric Stoll with sound by Nihil Bordures
Originally staged at the Gate in February 2008, Press continues the exciting new partnership between the Gate and Sadler’s Wells in presenting dance/theatre.
In Press the French choreographer and performer Pierre Rigal explores how our personal space is confined by the pressures of modern life, performing in a specially constructed boxed stage less than three and a half metres wide.

21st June (previews from 18th) to 18th July
Gate Theatre and Headlong Theatre present
Medea/Medea
By Dylan Tighe
Directed by Dylan Tighe, designed by Sarah Bacon
World premiere
New Directions winner Dylan Tighe will direct a new version of the Euripides tragedy, Medea.
In Medea/Medea, live performance interacts with pre-recorded image as the show probes the nature of translation, the concept of theatre and the place of myth in modern society.
New Directions was launched in 2008 by the Gate and Headlong to encourage emerging theatre artists to find a new approach to classic international plays and to broaden both companies’ commitment to celebrating and exploring the art of making theatre.
Further information on casting and the creative team will be announced shortly.
