Gielgud Centenary

14th April 2004 sees the centenary of the birth of Sir John Gielgud, one of the greatest actors of the 20th century, famous for his many Shakespearean roles including Hamlet, King Lear, Benedick and Prospero, his later work in plays by Alan Bennett and David Storey, films directed by Peter Greenaway and Alain Resnais as well as his Oscar-winning performance as Hobson, Dudley Moore's butler in the movie Arthur.

A volume of his letters and previously unpublished photographs from his personal collection will be published on 25th March by Weidenfeld & Nicolson (Watch out for Philip Fisher's review, coming shortly) and there are to be other events to celebrate his centenary.

An informal discussion on Sir John's life with Barbara Jefford, Jonathan Croall, John Miller and the book's editor, Richard Mangan.

7pm, National Portrait Gallery - Gielgud from Stage to Film
How did the twentieth-century theatre's greatest classical actor overcome his doubts and prejudices to become a major movie star? Jonathan Croall uses extracts from Gielgud's films to offer some answers.

John Gielgud's Letters. To mark his centenary and the publication of Gielgud's Letters, this is the first reading of his frank and enthralling correspondence.

7.30pm, Gielgud Centenary Gala with Judi Dench, Paul Scofield and Ian Richardson at the Gielgud Theatre, Shaftesbury Avenue, London W1
The RSC, RADA and The Shakespeare Guild, by arrangement with Thelma Holt and Bill Kenright, are presenting this special evening to celebrate the centenary of Sir John Gielgud's birth. The proceeds from the evening will go towards a bursary for RADA students as well as towards the voice and verse training programme for RSC actors.
