Dateline: 10th August, 2004 International Actors at the Globe Ten actors began a month long programme at Shakespeare’s Globe on Monday 2nd August as part of the annual International Artistic Residence. The Residence will culminate in a performance on the Globe stage on Bank Holiday Monday, 30 August, at 7.30pm. Now in its fourth year, the Residence aims to share the Globe’s working practices with professional actors from across the globe. During their month participants will follow an intensive programme of voice, movement, verse and acting work designed to respond to the specific challenges of the Elizabethan stage. To be considered for the programme actors must be established in their own countries and have significant classical experience. This year’s participants have been carefully selected through some of the Globe’s affiliated Shakespeare’s Globe Centres based in Canada, New Zealand and the United States. These centres offer a range of artistic and educational programmes, which seek to further the appreciation of Shakespeare. For the first time this year the Globe will welcome actors from two countries without a Shakespeare Globe Centre: South Africa and Denmark. Susannah Howard, the project co-ordinator, explains, “We decided to open the Residence to other countries when we realised the high level of demand it was creating. We are really looking forward to working with the participants from South Africa and Denmark - countries with whom we already have a strong association - and hope they enjoy the experience”. The Residence, the only training scheme run by the theatre department at Shakespeare’s Globe, will be led by the Globe’s Artistic Director Mark Rylance. He will be supported by Master of Voice Stewart Pearce, Master of Movement Glynn Macdonald and Master of Play and Words Giles Block, all of whom have worked closely with the Globe Theatre Company since it opened in 1997 and have established themselves internationally as Globe specialists. The performance on 30 August will be based around The Winter’s Tale by Shakespeare. Tickets priced £5 are on sale from the Globe’s Box Office on 020 7401 9919.
