Entitled Shakespeare and the Gunpowder Plot, the exhibition will be a hands-on investigation of events surrounding the 5th of November 1604. In partnership with the Metropolitan Police and the National Archive, well look beyond the traditional story surrounding Guy Fawkes and offer some fresh evidence in what was undoubtedly the trial of the century. Shakespeare and the Gunpowder Plot runs from April.
Magic in the WebGlobe Education began their first UK tour last week. The project is inspired by Shakespeares Othello. In workshop performances, five actors work with students to explore the plays issues of justice, judgement and forgiveness. Following the performance, students are asked to design two handkerchiefs which feature in Othello. The first, the handkerchief of love, is Othellos first gift to his new wife Desdemona and is spotted with strawberries (act III, scene VI). The second, a handkerchief of peace, is offered to Othello by Desdemona to soothe him when he believes she has been unfaithful. This handkerchief will draw on students own interpretations of peace. The handkerchiefs will be sewn together and used to line a Tent for Peace large enough to accommodate a class of students. The Magic in the Web tour will visit schools in Birmingham, Luton, Leicester, Cardiff, Manchester, Blackburn and Glasgow. Frost Fair Hailed a SuccessThe winter Frost Fair, which took place at Shakespeare's Globe Exhibition prior to Christmas, was a resounding success. Over 23,000 people attended the festive marketplace inspired by the frost fairs held on the frozen River Thames in the 16th century. Various stalls selling such items as home-made soaps, scarves and wire sculptures brought the UnderGlobe to life for the three week period. A colourful exhibition of dragons was also on display at the Globe throughout December. The dragons were created by young people for a nationwide competition run by the National Association of Decorative and Fine Arts Societies (NADFAS).
