Shakespeare's Globe exterior

Celebrate Shakespeare's Birthday with the Globe

Following on from the success of last year’s event, Shakespeare’s Globe will once again throw open its doors to the public on Saturday 23 April in celebration of Shakespeare’s birthday.

Celebrations will take the form of a birthday party to honour William Shakespeare with a range of games, tours and performances all bringing alive the spirit of the greatest writer in the English language. The event is open to all with activities suitable for the whole family. Doors will open at 9.30am.

For one day only members of the public will be able to perform their favourite lines from Shakespeare on the stage graced by some of the most famous actors of our day, such as Vanessa Redgrave, Gwenyth Paltrow, and Joseph Fiennes. Every hour Globe actors will be on hand to give professional advice on performing Shakespeare and budding performers will be able to find out what it’s really like to tread the boards on this extraordinary stage. Specially devised games and side-shows, period and modern music and traditional party food will add to the festivities.

There will be two special ticketed events:

Sweet Love Remember'd
The Globe sonnet walks will take place as part of the celebrations. Walkers can choose from two tours of Tudor London: one starting from Westminster and one from Shoreditch. Twelve sonneteers will entertain walkers as they stroll to Shakespeare’s Globe.

Tickets are £15 (£12 concessions) and are available from box office on 020 7901 9919 (booking is essential). Walks set off every 15 minutes from 10am.

Shall we Shog?
An evening performance (7.30pm) on the Globe stage created and hosted by Ken Campbell entitled Shall We Shog? This lighthearted and anarchic approach to Shakespeare is sure to be a fitting conclusion to the Birthday celebrations on 23rd April.

Tickets range from £5 – £29 and are available from box office on 020 7901 9919.

This event is supported by the Mayor of London as part of the celebrations for St George's Day 2005.
