Dateline: 8th February, 2007
The Globe on Tour Dominic Dromgoole, artistic director of Shakespeare's Globe, has announced plans to create a touring company of the kind which was common in Shakespeare's day. Using a limited cast and theminimum of set and props, the new company will tour Romeo and Juliet to outdoor spaces throughout the UK, starting with a performance at the Globe on 17th June. "There is a huge market in this country for Shakespeare outdoors," he said. "We are very keen to move into that market and tour shows around which are smaller than at the Globe." These shows will, he went on, "express some of our principles and will be achieved and created in the same way that we work here. Just as 400 years ago they used to tour out of here all the time." Dromgoole has also announced some casting and the creative teams for this year's season. Wilson Milam (Killer Joe, Hurlyburly and The Lieutenant Of Inishmore, all in the West End) will direct Othello, the opening play of the season, with Eamonn Walker playing Othello. Walker played the lead in Andrew Davies' 2001 TV modern version, which also starred Keeley Hawes, Christopher Eccleston, Richard Coyle and Carl McCrystal. Rebecca Gatward will direct The Merchant of Venice and Dromgoole himself Love's Labour's Lost. Mark Rosenblatt will be at the helm of Jack Shepherds Holding Fire! and Charlotte Westenra directed We, the People. Love's Labour's Lost will also tour to South Korea, the first, Dromgoole hopes, of a series of international tours. Please note that all three Archive indices are very long and will therefore take some time to download.
