New Godot Company at the Cockpit

The Godot Company is a cooperative of actors who have come together with John Calder – Beckett’s principle publisher - to perform a definitive production of what many consider to be the most significant play of the twentieth century.

All are experienced actors with many other professional engagements in the theatre, film, radio and T.V. This is why the cooperative is three times the size of the cast and every actor has learned two roles.

It is intended that the Godot Company should be a permanent group performing Waiting for Godot and other plays by Beckett as well as other projects as decided by the members. It will tour British and foreign theatrical outlets and is willing to make its work available to schools and other venues.

John Calder is co-founder of The Godot Company. He was a close friend of Beckett and has published most of the works in the U.K. Since he founded his publishing house in 1949, Calder has published some of the best of contemporary British and international dramatists including Adamov, Arrabal, Howard Barker, Steven Berkoff, Edward Bond, Marguerite Duras, Ionesco, Georg Kaiser, David Mercer, Robert McLellan, Robert Pinget, Pirandello, Peter Weiss, Heathcote Williams and Snoo Wilson; as well as works by such writers as Henry Miller and William Burroughs. He is no stranger to controversy – having endured many lengthy legal actions for publishing works accused of libel or obscenity. In 2001 he published his autobiography, Pursuit: The Uncensored Memoirs of John Calder.

The members of the cooperative are Sean Barratt, John Calder, Andrea Cunliffe, Tim Hardy, Hugh Hayes, Anthony Jackson, Oengus MacNamara, Peter Marinker, Peter Pacey, and Tony Rohr. The company is subject to changes and additions. Ralph Petty (designer) and Karen Wentworth (Alexander Technique advisor) are associate members.

The company will be presenting Waiting for Godot at the Cockpit Theatre in Gateforth Street NW8 from 10th to 28th Feb 2004 at 7.30pm (Tues to Saturday). Tickets are £10 (£8 concessions) but there is a special offer for the first week (10th to 14th) of £5 off. The Box Office phone number is 020 7258 2921.
