A scene from Golda's Balcony

Solo Broadway Hit for London

Golda's Balcony, the Tony and multi award-winning Broadway hit play about the indomitable Israeli Prime Minster Golda Meir, will play The Shaw Theatre in London this summer. Tovah Feldshuh recreates her performance in William Gibson's one-woman show, running 12th to 28th June (prevuws from 7th).

Directed by Scott Schwartz, Golda's Balcony is a portrait of the legendary Golda Meir, the Milwaukee schoolteacher who became Prime Minister of Israel in 1969. From the pogroms of Russia to the halls of the Knesset, Meir's life encapsulates the dramatic story of the birth of Israel in the wake of the Holocaust, and its subsequent seemingly endless struggle for peace for much of the 20th Century.

Golda's Balcony premiered at the Manhattan Ensemble Theatre in New York, becoming an instant hit. When it transferred to Broadway, it played for seventeen months, making it the longest-running one-woman show in Broadway history. It won the Drama Desk Award for best Solo Performance and the Lucille Lortel Award for Best Actress for Feldshuh, as well as her fourthTony nomination for best actress. The show itself was awarded a Drama League nomination as Outstanding Production.

Tovah Feldshuh has received four Tony Award nominations for Best Actress and won four Drama Desk Awards, four Outer Critics Circle Awards, the Obie, the Theatre World and the Lucille Lortel Awards. She created the title role in Yentl on Broadway and for her portrayal of the Helena, the Czech freedom fighter in the TV miniseries Holocaust, she received her first Emmy nomination. Her second Emmy nod came for her portrayal of defence attorney Danielle Melnick on NBC'S Law and Order. She also starred in the Hollywood film Kissing Jessica Stein, for which she won the Golden Satellite Award for Best Supporting Actress. For her performance as Golda Meir, Feldshuh received the biggest raves of the Broadway season and the play set new Box Office records at the Helen Hayes Theatre in New York.

Philip Fisher interviewed Tovah Feldshuh in New York in 2004.
