Dateline: 10th September, 2003 BBC Anchorman Joins Racing Cast BBC horseracing anchorman and former champion jockey Richard Pitman will be sharing commentary duties with Channel 4s Doug Moscrop in a comedy play that has the Grand National as its backdrop. Good To Firm is a fast-moving romp set against the backdrop of the worlds most famous race and asks the question: Do you ever forget your first love, your childhood sweetheart? The play, which sold out and broke box office records on its premiere in June 2002 will be restaged at the Customs House, South Shields, where ticket sales are rocketing following the overwhelming success of Dirty Dusting, which was penned by the same writers and transfers to the Theatre Royal in Newcastle next week after sixteen sell-out performances at the South Shields venue. Richard Pitman, himself a published author of repute, has been a broadcaster with the BBC for the past 25 years. The play sees the lead characters fixation with Crisp, a horse so narrowly beaten by Red Rum in the 1973 Grand National. Pitman, who rode Crisp on that occasion, said, I read the script and loved it. It is both very, very funny and poignant. Im delighted to have been asked to do the voice over for the mock Grand National. Trevor Wood, who co-wrote the play with Ed Waugh, said: Its absolutely fantastic having Richard Pitman on board.
Imagine the combination of Grand National day and your first real sweetheart coming back into your life after 28 years carrying a secret. Good To Firm captures this excitement - and the outrageous consequences!
Good to Firm runs for five shows from Wednesday, September 24, to Saturday, September 27.
