35% Cut

The National Lottery Grants for the Arts programme is to be cut by 35% (£29m) to help pay for the 2012 Olympics, leaving just £54m to be distributed. As a result, Arts Council England has changed the criteria, capping all grants at £200,000 and limiting awards to projects lasting twelve months or less.

In addition culture secretary Tessa Jowell has announced that ACE is to lose £112.5m from its regular grant-in-aid, which is double the amount it had expected to lose.

ACE has already said that any cuts which happen in the Comprehensive Spending Review, which is due later this year, will not be shared equally but it expects that some regularly funded organisations will lose their grants whilst others will have theirs maintained.

Industry insiders are worried about the cummulative effects of the two cuts announced, with the ITC (Independent Theatre Council) fearing that national touring and new writing in particular will suffer. The possible effect on touring has caused apprehension in the dance world too, with Robert Noble, co-director of New Adventures, telling The Stage, "If they had put a £200,000 cap on our grants in the past, then shows like Edward Scissorhands would certainly never have happened."
