Theatr Gwynedd Closure Protest

Trade union Unite has protested at the forthcoming closure of Theatr Gwynedd in Bangor, North Wales, with the loss of twenty jobs.

The University of Bangor, which owns the theatre, intends to demolish it in October and replace it with a new performing arts centre and says that its work will continue in other venues until the new building is opened. The plan, which was announced in May, has the support of the board of the theatre, the arts council, local councils and the university, a universty spokesman said.

Unite, however, is concerned for the loss of the jobs and its regional officer John Hamilton said that the closure is a devastating blow for the workers who are feeling "extreme uncertainty" about their future. He added that Unite expects the closure to be put on hold until talks can be held.
