Hackney Empire

Hackney to Go Dark in 2010

The Hackney Empire is to go dark for much of next year, it has been revealed.

The closure, which interim Chief Executive Clarie Middleton calls a “period of reflection”, will begin when this year's panto Aladdin ends and will re-open at the latest in time for the 2010 panto.

During the closure, which will see the venue carrying on its youth and community work with a skeleton staff and so will involve redundancies, the Board will attempt to address the financial problems which have faced the theatre for some time and will look for and appoint a new CEO.

The venue believes that it will emerge from the period of closure stronger and ready to play its part in the 2012 Olympics cultural programme.
