Dateline: 11th May, 2007
It has now been confirmed - by a full page ad in the programme for Fame at the Shaftesbury Theatre - that the multi-Tony Award-winning Broadway musical Hairspray will open there on 30th October, previewing from 11th. Hairspray was originally supposed to reach the West End in spring 2003, when the Victoria Palace was the expected venue, but that fell through, and the next news to emerge was that it would reach the Cambridge Theatre in the autumn of 2005. A casting call was issued but, again, the transfer failed to materialise. The show had its premiere at the Neil Simon Theater on Broadway in 2002 and, in 2003, won eight Tonys, including Best Musical. It continues at the same theatre and currently stars John Pinette as Edna Turnbladand Shannon Durig as Tracy Turnblad. It is based on John Water's 1988 film. No casting or other details have been announced, although the rumour mill has suggested range of actors to play Edna, from Bob Hoskins to Matt Lucas. Please note that all three Archive indices are very long and will therefore take some time to download.
