Dateline: 3rd October, 2004
Hard Times on Tour Love and Madness Productions have begun touring a new version of Dickens' Hard Times, whch will play until 19th November. Adapted by Richard Hurst, it tells the story of a brother and sister, reared by their strict utilitarian father, in ignorance of love and affection, in an industrial northern town. An antidote to the drudgery and misery of the towns inhabitants is found in a warm hearted and fun loving circus troupe. Dickens novel is compact, entertaining and fast moving whilst looking at issues created by the then new concept of industrialisation and their effect on individual workers. This exciting, colourful and thought provoking adaptation was specially commissioned to suit the unique LOVE&MADNESS style and the aim of making the classics relevant and accessible to modern audiences, especially young audiences. The action makes references, which sweep from the industrial crises of the 1970s through the high profile, era defining, disputes of the 80s and 90s and the new controls on education to the horrors wreaked by globalisation on vulnerable workers worldwide. How much progress have we really made since Dickens day? Many, if not all of the issues he addressed are just as relevant in the climate of change that we are living through today. October 2004
November 2004
