Harry Towb (1925 - 2009) County Antrim-born actor Harry Towb has died of cancer at the age of 83, just days before his 84th birthday. Born in Larne to a Russian Father and Irish mother, he was brought up in Belfast. He began his theatrical career in Northern Ireland and moved to England in the fifties. His wide theatrical credits include Brighton Beach Memoirs, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum and Death of a Salesman at the National Theatre, Travesties at the Aldwych, The Iceman Cometh and Man and Superman for the RSC and Philadelphia Here I Come, The Rivals and The Importance Of Being Earnest at the Abbey in Dublin. He also appeared in Little Shop of Horrors and Bar Mitzvah Boy. His most recent stage performamnce was at the Waterfront Hall in Belfast last year where he played Teiresias in Owen McCafferty's version of Sophocles' Antigone in which the BTG's Ian Hill described his performance as being part of a "trio of excellence". His television appearances included Z Cars, Dixon of Dock Green, Callan, Softly Softly, The Avengers, Home James, Moll Flanders, Heartbeat, Casualty, Doctor Who, The Bill and, last December, two episodes of EastEnders. He was married to, and is survived by, the actress Diana Hoddinott.
