Dateline: 10th August, 2003 ACE Bails Out Haymarket Leicester's Haymarket Theatre has been saved, thanks to a huge £1.3 million rescue deal by the Arts Council - but 63 staff will lose their jobs. The theatre closed at the end of last month after amassing debts of £450,000. It is due to reopen next year after Arts Council bosses approved a recovery plan which involves the Haymarket dramatically reducing its operating costs. Since the closure 76 staff have been on fully paid special leave. The Haymarket's board said most would be offered "very generous" redundancy terms and help to find new jobs. Union leaders, who have called for the resignation of chief executive Mandy Stewart, expressed their doubt that the Haymarket would reopen. They felt there would be no major theatre in the city until a venue is housed in Leicester's new cultural quarter which is scheduled to open in 2006.
