Death of James Hazeldine

Actor James Hazeldine has died, aged 55, after a short illness. He was taken ill on 10th December, suffering pains in his chest, after a preview of Christopher Hampton's The Talking Cure at the National, where he was playing Freud to Ralph Fiennes' Jung. He spent some days in intensive care, where he died on Tuesday night..

He is best known to the general public as Bayleaf in the long-running TV series London's Burning, but he had a long and successful career in theatre as well as television. He has played with the RSC (Troilus and Cressida, The Fool, Timon of Athens, The Love Girl and The Innocent), the National (All My Sons, Chips with Everything, Long Time Gone, Small Change and Kick for Touch, as well as The Talking Cure) and the Royal Court (his first London work).

He played twice on Broadway, in Strange Interlude (with Gelnda Jackson) and The Iceman Cometh (with Kevin Spacey).

He was the first to play Jimmy Porter in Look Back in Anger on television, and appeared in a whole string of successful TV series, including Midsomer Murders and Dalziel and Pascoe. He also directed episodes of London's Burning and Heartbeat. His film work includes Emma and Pink Floyd - The Wall.

He leaves a partner and two children in their twenties.
