Acting Can Damage Your Health

Over 75% of actors suffer discomfort or injury from their work, the Chartered Society of Physiotherapists has discovered in a survey for Equity. Most incidents (84%) happened in theatre rather than TV or film, and ann increasng number of injuries are repetitive strain injuries.

According to a report in The Stage, actors in small-scale touring companies, who are expected to carry heavy loads and put up the sets, are at greater risk, but stages that are not sprung or which are raked cause a considerable number of injuries.

Equity is advising employers that they should organise proper warm-up and cool-down exercises for actors working on raked stages and the CSP says that actors should not be afraid to suggest changes to choreography and direction which might cause injury.
