Dateline: 28th March, 2004 Acting Can Damage Your Health Over 75% of actors suffer discomfort or injury from their work, the Chartered Society of Physiotherapists has discovered in a survey for Equity. Most incidents (84%) happened in theatre rather than TV or film, and ann increasng number of injuries are repetitive strain injuries. According to a report in The Stage, actors in small-scale touring companies, who are expected to carry heavy loads and put up the sets, are at greater risk, but stages that are not sprung or which are raked cause a considerable number of injuries. Equity is advising employers that they should organise proper warm-up and cool-down exercises for actors working on raked stages and the CSP says that actors should not be afraid to suggest changes to choreography and direction which might cause injury. Please note that all three Archive indices are very long and will therefore take some time to download.
