Winner of the best actress award at the 2016 Buxton Fringe, Helen Rutter returns to the Derbyshire town with her latest one-woman show The Ladder.
She said performing at Buxton in 2016 was such a positive and creative experience that it gave her the inspiration for a new show.
“I was on my way home after performing my play Human last year and I was struck with an idea. It was very exciting as it hit me almost fully formed. I started writing The Ladder immediately.”
The play involves Helen discovering new things about herself, her relationship and who she wants to be when she is stuck up a ladder.
She began creating her own work after having children and moving back to the north from London seven years ago. With last-minute auditions and rigid touring schedules, she found the reality of being a jobbing actress less appealing. She says producing her own work gives her more flexibility and freedom.
“I think that when things are home-made and come from a truly creative place they can be really exciting, raw and real. Which is what I hope this play is as well as very funny!”
Helen Rutter will present The Ladder Underground at The Arts Centre on Friday 7 July at 5:45PM, Sunday 9 July at 8:15M, Thursday 13 July at 8:15PM and Monday 17 July at 5:45PM.
