High School Musical to Tour

Disney is to tour a stage version of its popular High School Musical in the new year.

The film preniered in the US on the Disney Channel in January 2006 and became the highest rated film ever shown on that channel. When it played on the UK's Disney Channel in September 2006, it achieved the same status. The album went double platinum in the UK.

The stage show will feature all the songs from the original chart-topping film soundtrack, including the U.K. hit singles “Breaking Free” and “We’re All In This Together”, plus two songs specially written for the tour. The book is by David Simpatico, adapted from the original movie script which was written by Peter Barsocchini. The director will be Jeff Calhoun (Grease and Big River on Broadway) and the touring company will have 34 actors and a live orchestra. Casting will be announced later this year.

The tour opens at the Churchill Theatre, Bromley, on 23rd January, 2008, and will go on to Stoke-on-Trent, Norwich, Edinburgh, Wolverhampton, Woking, Birmingham, Milton Keynes, Wimbledon, Manchester, Bristol and Glasgow. More dates are expected to be announced in September.
