Welsh touring theatre company Hijinx celebrates its 25th anniversary this year. Based in the Wales Millennium Centre, the company tours Two new productions a year throughout Wales and England; the spring tour is a show for people with learning disabilities and the autumn tour is for the general public, touring to community venues and theatres. In their Silver Jubilee year the company is delighted to be employing a performer with Downs syndrome in the spring show Seize the Day by Glenys Evans, which will be directed by Artistic Director and founder member Gaynor Lougher.
Seize The Day is a new play set in the 1930s in the house of a rich aristocratic family Lord and Lady Webb, where hierarchy is strong and you know your place. A new young maid, Mary joins the kitchen staff in the lowest position in the house. Mary is seen as someone with no hope of advancement or marriage, in complete contrast to the beautiful but wilful daughter of the house Miss Julie. Resisting the demarcation of society, and with the help of a good friend, Mary rises above all expectations . The autumn show, directed by Rosamunde Hutt, Hijinxs first Artistic Director, will be Estella's Fire by Louise Osborn. Estella becomes the heroine of her own fascinating narrative. As a young girl she was sent to live with an eccentrically reclusive old woman. She is locked away from the world, behind gated walls in a place where time stands still. Everything is far from ordinary, until the hidden needs and desires of this vulnerable girl are awakened by the arrival of 'the boy' from beyond the gate. Join Estella on an emotional journey from childhood to adulthood as she struggles to act on her own feelings rather than the motives forced on her by others. Can Estella rise from the ashes to become a strong and empowered young woman? Please note that all three Archive indices are very long and will therefore take some time to download.
