Top talent: the B-Side Hip Hop Festival

Some of the “biggest names in local and international hip hop talent” will take to the streets of Southside, Birmingham for the second B-Side Hip Hop Festival.

The three-day event has been organised by the city’s Hippodrome in partnership with hip hop artists Break Mission, Juice Aleem, Mickael “Marso” Riviere and graffitiartist.com.

The festival will feature a range of “exhilarating” outdoor performances, pop-up dance events, rap battles, interactive talks and live graffiti art alongside a programme of workshops.

The 2016 event featured more than 70 performers, wordsmiths and artists from the city as well as 150 street dance competitors from across the UK. More than 5,000 people attended.

Graham Callister, the Hippodrome’s director of creative programmes, said, “we recognise that Birmingham and the wider Midlands region have a long association with and demand for hip hop culture.

“Through B-Side Hip Hop Festival, we want to provide a platform to engage with and celebrate today's talent from the city and further afield.”

Independent choreographer Mickael “Marso” Riviere added, “I'm looking forward to seeing how much progress returning competitors have made and also to present a new edition of the experimental battles with more live musicians.”

The festival will take place from 19 until 21 May. Further information is available at the Birmingham Hippodrome web site.
