Relaxed: Jack and the Beanstalk at Birmingham Hippodrome

Birmingham Hippodrome and Qdos Pantomimes are to stage a second relaxed performance of “the UK’s biggest panto” Jack and the Beanstalk.

Specially created for anyone with an autistic spectrum condition, learning disability or a sensory and communication disorder, the relaxed performance gives those who might otherwise feel excluded the chance to experience live theatre.

A relaxed atmosphere at a performance helps reduce anxiety levels: some of the loud elements are reduced while strobe lighting and pyrotechnics are removed.

Creative learning manager Liz Leck said, “we’re committed to providing access for all at Birmingham Hippodrome. For the past seven years we’ve been working with hundreds of people with learning difficulties across the city. Presenting a relaxed performance helps to enhance their experience of live theatre and makes a real difference in their lives.”

Corporate development manager Judith Greenburgh added, “thanks to tremendous support from local businesses, grant-making trusts and individual supporters, we achieved our target, raising nearly £14,000 to help make this happen.”

The relaxed performance of Jack and the Beanstalk, which features Jane McDonald, Duncan James, Chris Gascoyne, Gary Wilmot, Paul Zerdin and Matt Slack, will be held on Thursday 29 January at 1PM.
