History Boys Wins Best Play Award The National Theatre production of Alan Bennett's The History Boys has been named Best Play by the New York Drama Critics' Circle. The play, directed by Nicholas Hytner, had its world premiere on 18th May, 2004 at the National and opened at Broadways Broadhurst Theatre on 23rd April, 2006. The announcement was made on 11th May, the day before Bennett was made a Freeman of the city of Leeds. The 72 year old playwright was was born and raised in Armley and City Council leader Andrew Carter said, "While his glittering career has taken him to all corners of the world, he is a west Leeds lad who has never lost touch with his Leeds roots, I am absolutely delighted that the city is able to honour him." Another British production to be honoured by the Critics' Circle is the Watermill production of Sondheim's Sweeney Todd. John Doyle, Sarah Travis and the company were awarded a special citation by the NYDCC for the production which premierd at the Watermill in 2004 and opened at Broadways Eugene ONeill Theatre on 3rd November, 2005.
