Spring and Summer in Hammersmith
The Lyric, Hammersmith, has annonced its spring/summer 2007 programme:
In the Main House
Cymbeline
Directed and freely adapted by Emma Rice
A Kneehigh Theatre Production in association with the Royal Shakespeare
Company
17 Jan - 3 Feb
Kneehigh Theatre return to the Lyric with their latest production
of Shakespeare's most anarchic play Cymbeline. This is Kneehigh's
first interpretation of Shakespeare and has been approached with their
usual unconventionality. Working with regular collaborator Carl Grose,
Emma Rice produces a new, freely adapted text from the original. A
wicked Queen, two princes kidnapped at birth, a daughter's betrayal,
a banished lover and mistaken identity provides magic and delight,
wit and passion. The company's trademark vivid, physical style of
story-telling creates a wild, giddy and elemental show that marries
comedy to tragedy with poetry and electrifying live music.
Ramayana
Adapted and directed by David Farr
A Lyric Hammersmith Production
9 Feb - 10 March
Following the success of David Farr's collaboration with Vesturport
on Kafka's Metamorphosis, Farr joins forces with Amit Lahav
of Gecko and leading light of the Asian music scene Shri to create
a highly physical and visual new adaptation of one of the greatest
love stories of all time. An epic tale of love, honour and revenge,
Ramayana vividly brings alive the plight of lovers Rama and
Sita as they find themselves exiled from their homeland and plunged
into the deep forests of Southern India.
Don't Look Now
Adapted by Nell Leyshon
Based on Don't Look Now by Daphne Du Maurier
Conceived and directed by Lucy Bailey

Lucy Bailey comes to the Lyric for the first time with a filmic staging
of the classic, supernatural thriller, Don't Look Now. Following
the death of their young daughter, John and Laura visit Venice to
escape their grief. They meet two sisters, one of whom claims to have
psychic visions of the dead girl. Tension mounts as the couple are
led through a maze of canals and alleyways towards a terrifying climax.
The Illustrious & Unholy History of St George and the Dragon
Written by Tom Morris and Carl Heap
Directed by Carl Heap
A beggarsbelief and Warwick Arts Centre Production
3 - 14 April
An 'unstageable' epic adventure with a high-octane mix of history
and legend for adults and children. A baby named George is born with
curious birthmarks, then mysteriously vanishes into thin air. This
strange boy is possessed of unusual powers and has one simple conviction:
he must kill a dragon. So begins a quest that takes him to the extremities
of the known world, but will he ever find the dragon he seeks? A story
about family loyalties, faith and national identity, the show weaves
together live music, circus and fire.
Absolute Beginners
Based on the book by Colin MacInnes
Adapted by Roy Williams
Directed by Liam Steel
World Premiere
Music by Soweto Kinch
A Lyric Hammersmith Production
26 April - 26 May
Roy Williams, Soweto Kinch (Mercury Music Prize winner) and dance
theatre director Liam Steel (DV8, Stan Won't Dance) join forces to
create an explosively physical evocation of sexual liberalism, gang
culture and racial tension, based on Colin MacInnes' bestsller Absolute
Beginners. Set in the summer of 1958 that ends with the Notting
Hill race riots, Absolute Beginners paints a vivid picture
of London's changing society and the emergence of a style-conscious
youth culture, as teenagers blow away the cobwebs of post-war life
and create the world anew.
Angels in America
Part One: Millennium Approaches
Part Two: Perestroika
By Tony Kushner
Directed by Daniel Kramer
A Lyric Hammersmith, Headlong Theatre and Citizens Theatre Glasgow
Production
20 June - 22 July
Headlong's Daniel Kramer directs the first UK revival of Tony Kushner's
two-part masterpiece since its premiere at the National Theatre. A
story of divine intervention as New York is turned upside down by
the chaotic energy of the 1980s and the destructive terror of AIDS,
Angels in America is one of the defining works of 20th century
drama. Staged in two parts and featuring acclaimed performer Greg
Hicks and Olivier Award nominee Ann Mitchell, Tony Kushner's Pulitzer
prize winner weaves together private and public Reagan-era lives in
a vivid dissection of relationships, survival and faith.
In the Studio
The Receipt
Created by Will Adamsdale and Chris Branch
23 January - 10 February
Perrier Award-winning Will Adamsdale and sonic artist Chris Branch
come to the Lyric with the hit of the Edinburgh Fringe 2006, The

told by two men, a filing cabinet and a Moog.
Mr Sole Abode
Created by Madrugada
28 Feb - 17 March
B-boy and hip-hop theatre pioneer Benji Reid directs Mr Sole Abode,
the first show from Leo Kay's new physical performance company, Madrugada.
Fusing text, physical performance, dance theatre, sound and a set
by Faulty Optic, the show tells the story of self-proclaimed architect
Mr Sole Abode. Unable to function under the stresses and strains of
contemporary society, he chooses to opt out of a life valued by possessions
and live in a fridge instead.
Your Hand in Mine
Created by Wishbone
20 April - 5 May
Visual theatre makers Wishbone create a funny and touching story that
unfolds in and around the audience. Somewhere in the city, Sarah works
through a series of derelict properties awaiting demolition. Meanwhile,
Gary holds out against an eviction order. Each in their own private
world, their isolated lives are rocked by some surprising events.
Agreste (Drylands)
Created by Dende Collective
8 - 26 May
Previously at the Lyric with the surreal and sensual Dona
Flor and her Two Husbands and The Piranha Lounge, Dende
Collective return with the European premiere of the hit Brazilian
play, Agreste. Set amidst the dusty drylands of the Brazilian
outback in a world of poverty and ignorance, two people fall wildly
in love. Dende blend physical performance, puppetry and live music
to create a bold new version of this award-winning play by Newton
Moreno, one of Brazil's most talented playwrights.
Longwave
Created by Signal to Noise
19 - 30 June
Multi-award winning director/writer Chris Goode, creator of site-specific
theatre adventures including the pizza restaurant touring Il Padrino
Express, Longwave is a seductively bleak comedy performed
entirely without words. A couple of scientists are stranded in the
middle of nowhere, living in a run-down shed. Trying to make sense
of the strange and hostile world around them, afraid of life and living,
they invent games, make music and tune into the radio to pass the
time.
