The new Hull Truck Theatre

Council Cuts Hull Truck

Hull City Council has decided to cut its grant to Hull Truck by just short of 26%, from £386,780 to £286,780 for 2011/2012. This follows a cut of just under 7% (from £559,035 to £520,461) in Arts Council funding.

It was feared that the council grant might be cut even more, which would have put the theatre's future at risk, but the council's cabinet rejected that option. The result of the two cuts, chief executive Andrew Smaje told The Stage, will be a reduction of about a third in in-house productions and the company will, for the first time, look to co-produce shows.

The company moved into its new theatre in Ferensway in April 2009. It was founded as an improvisation-based company by Mike Bradwell in 1971. In 1983 it moved into its first theatre in Spring Street and John Godber was appointed artistic director.
